This is the switch screwed into the drivers (right hand) side of the gearbox top housing and is the switch closer to the rear of the gearbox. It is a critical electronic sensor that communicates the selected gear position (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, etc.) to the vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU). A replacement is often required due to electrical failure caused by age, wear, or contamination from moisture and dirt.
A faulty neutral position switch can prevent your vehicle from starting, as its primary safety function is to only allow the engine to crank when in Park or Neutral. If left unresolved, you could be left stranded with a vehicle that will not start, or worse, create a dangerous situation where the vehicle could potentially start in gear and lurch forward or backward unexpectedly.
Not to be mistaken with the reverse switch- which is located in front of this switch and has a different plug.
Installation is a straightforward job for a workshop or experienced DIY mechanic, though access to the top of the gearbox is the main consideration. While no other parts are typically required, it is wise to inspect the condition of the electrical connector and wiring for any damage or corrosion during installation.
Choosing Genuine Nissan Parts is your best insurance for quality, fitment, and reliability. This neutral position switch is manufactured to Nissan's strict standards, guaranteeing correct performance and service life. Using inferior aftermarket switches can lead to premature electrical failure, leaving you stranded, and introduces the serious safety risk of the vehicle potentially starting in gear.
